Federal DOT Requirements
Under 49 CFR §393.60, tinting is permitted on the windshield and the windows immediately to the driver’s left and right, provided the applicable glazing maintains at least 70% parallel luminous transmittance. This federal 70% requirement does not apply to other windows on a commercial motor vehicle; however, additional state requirements may apply.
Texas Requirements
Texas law regulates materials applied to vehicle windows and prohibits materials that obstruct or reduce the operator’s clear view. Texas requirements may differ depending on the vehicle and its classification or use. Commercial motor vehicles may also be subject to applicable federal requirements in addition to Texas regulations.
